Overview

Frictional Games is an independent Swedish video game developer based in Helsingborg, Sweden. The company is known for their survival horror games. The first project was 2007 game Penumbra: Overture published by Paradox Interactive. The next year the studio developed a sequel to Overture – Penumbra: Black Plague, and an expansion pack for it ¬– Penumbra: Requiem. The games were mostly well-received a placed some of the ideas that were later used in Frictional Games breakthrough hit – Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It was released independently via online distribution and sold more than 1.4 million copies. The game gained a cult following and spawned a sequel Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs developed by The Chinese room. In 2015 Frictional Games released another well-received horror game – SOMA that abandoned some of the gameplay mechanics from the studio’s previous projects in favor of more focused narrative.
